Award winning winery presents unique opportunity

More than 22 hectares of riverfront land housing 25,000 established vines and complemented by a cellar door that is consistently awarded five-star ratings from visitors is on the market for the first time in almost three decades.

Riversands Winery, located on the picturesque banks of the Balonne River in St George, South West Queensland, has an established reputation for its award-winning wines, delicious food and exceptional customer service and presents a unique opportunity for a talented and entrepreneurial winemaker to make their mark in Queensland’s growing wine industry.

With its deep sandy loam soils, the well-established vineyard produces White Muscat, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, Merlot, Shiraz, Saperavi, Ruby Cabernet and Black Muscat wine grapes, and recorded a bumper season in 2022.

Today, Riversand Vineyards wine is sold through multiple marketing channels including the cellar door, more than 50 retail outlets, at 30 shows and festivals, and direct-to-customer online transactions.

Presented to market by rural property specialists, LAWD, selling agent Director Simon Cudmore said the vineyard offers diverse income streams not often seen in these markets, and opportunities to expand the business further.

“Revenue generated from wine sales and the cellar door hospitality, as well as income from the sale of table grapes to major supermarkets on the eastern seaboard, provides diversification to income streams,” Mr Cudmore said.

“Yet the property also presents the perfect opportunity for a visionary to leverage the opportunities in the burgeoning outback tourism and agritourism markets.

“Since COVID-19, outback tourism has increased significantly, and more and more people are wanting to escape crowded spaces to experience the great outdoors and authentic outback and on-farm experiences.

“As it stands, the property is a very successful business, and given its beautiful location, the next owner could look to broaden the tourism offering through integration of luxury accommodation or glamping.”

Riversands Wines current owner, David Blacket, who has spent the past 29 years shaping Riversands Vineyards, has significantly increased productivity through incremental improvements, employing highly experienced staff and developing a proven management structure.

“When we bought the Riversands Winery, the winery was very much in its infancy, and we were able to take it to another level,” Mr Blacket said.

“We found the wine industry to be very supportive of newcomers, and we grew our venture alongside the Queensland industry.”

The property boasts an extensive irrigation network fed by a 226-megalitre water licence from the Beardmore Dam, and secure supply chains for its wine operations, with Queensland’s oldest established winery, Ballendean Estate Wines, bottling the Riversands wines in the Granite Belt.
